Welcome to
Doula Services of Southern Nevada!
Birth is an incredible journey that begins at the time of conception. As soon as a woman finds out that she is pregnant all sorts of emotions start coursing through her body.
- How will my body change?
- Will I be a good mother?
- How will I be able to cope with the pain of labor and delivery?
In today's social structure many women find themselves alone before, during and after the birth of their baby, and that can be overwhelming. If they do have "help", is it really helpful, or just causing more stress for the new mom (and dad too!)? During the actual labor and delivery the father often has little or no experience with the birth process, and any childbirth education classes taken? Well, that information is gone. Putting the onus of complete support on the father/partner is unfair and can introduce stress that need not be there. This is where a Doula steps in.
The word doula is a Greek word that means women’s servant. Women have been serving other women in childbirth for centuries and have proven that this support from another woman has positive effects on the labor process. A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical and informational support to the woman who is expecting, in labor or has recently given birth. The doula's role is to help women have a safe, memorable and empowering birthing experience.
Studies have shown that having a Doula present cuts the overall
rate of Cesarean Section by 50%, as well
as cutting the length of labor by 25%. The
need for interventions such as Pitocin or the request for an epidural decrease
as well when a Professional Labor Assistant is present.
Fathers/partners benefit from having a Doula present as well.
As a modern society we make more "demands on first time fathers that exceed those made on medical students"(The Doula Book, pg. 137).

About Me
I have been a Doula for three years, completing my certification through DONA, International as well as completing my Lactation Certification through the Healthy Children's Project. I have attended both home and hospital births and I have been privileged at each and every one to welcome the new life being brought forth. There were many reasons why I chose to become a Doula. Educating and empowering women to take back control of their birthing experience is one of the reasons. In my own birthing experiences there were many times in which I felt lost, afraid and out of control. If I can help other women and their partners to NOT feel this way then I have successfully walked with them through the journey of birth. Birth should be a time of joy and excitement, not stress and fear. Having a Doula with you can take that stress away.
